How Long ETIAS Lasts — and What Can Cut It Short

ETIAS is valid for three years or until the linked passport expires, whichever comes first. Several events — including passport renewal — can end it before the three years are up.

Standard validity

ETIAS is valid for three years from the date of issue, or until the linked passport expires — whichever is earlier. Within that period, the authorization covers an unlimited number of trips to all 30 participating Schengen countries. There is no per-trip limit and no requirement to reapply between journeys.

ETIAS validity does not reset the 90/180-day clock. The authorization permits repeated entry, but the 90/180-day rule governs how many days per rolling period may be spent inside the Schengen area regardless of how many trips are made.

Passport expiry as the hidden cap

The most commonly overlooked constraint on ETIAS validity is the passport expiry date. If your passport expires 18 months after your ETIAS is issued, your ETIAS is also effectively valid for only 18 months — not the nominal three years.

Travelers who apply for ETIAS with a passport close to expiry receive an authorization with a shorter practical validity period. The solution is to renew your passport before applying for ETIAS, ensuring the full three-year term applies. Renewing after obtaining ETIAS invalidates the authorization and requires a new application and a new fee. See [ETIAS and passport renewal](/articles/etias-passport-renewal) for full detail.

What else invalidates ETIAS early

Beyond passport expiry, several other events can invalidate ETIAS before its nominal term ends. Passport renewal or replacement — whether the document was lost, stolen, or physically damaged — immediately invalidates the authorization linked to the old document. A new application using the new passport is required.

Acquisition of a nationality that is ETIAS-exempt — for example, obtaining EU citizenship — renders ETIAS unnecessary and the existing authorization functionally moot. ETIAS may also be revoked by the issuing authority after issuance if new information is received: a criminal conviction, a new database match, or a finding that the application contained false information.

What ETIAS does not cover

A valid ETIAS authorizes a traveler to board a flight to a Schengen country and to present themselves at the Schengen border. It does not guarantee entry. The border officer retains authority to refuse entry on applicable grounds, regardless of ETIAS status.

ETIAS does not extend, modify, or override the 90/180-day stay limit. It is an entry authorization, not a stay entitlement. The 90/180-day rule applies independently of ETIAS.

Checking your ETIAS status

Travelers can check the status and remaining validity of their ETIAS through the official EU portal. This is the recommended step before any trip, particularly if time has passed since the authorization was obtained or if any change to travel documents has occurred since then.
