ETIAS and Passport Renewal: Why a New Passport Means a New ETIAS

ETIAS is tied to the specific passport used to apply. Renew your passport for any reason and your authorization becomes invalid — a new application is required.

How ETIAS is tied to your passport

ETIAS authorization is not linked to the traveler as a person. It is linked to the specific passport document submitted during the application. The authorization stores your passport number and expiry date. When an airline or border system queries the ETIAS database, it checks the document in your hand against the authorization on record. If the passport numbers do not match, no valid authorization exists.

A new passport — regardless of why it was issued — is treated by the system as a new traveler identity. There is no mechanism to transfer an existing ETIAS to a replacement document.

What happens at the border with a renewed passport

If you present a passport that is different from the one used to obtain ETIAS, the authorization will not be recognized. Airline check-in systems query the ETIAS database when you board. A mismatch between the passport number and the ETIAS record will result in boarding being refused.

If a mismatch is not caught at check-in and the traveler arrives at a Schengen border, entry will be denied. There is no grace period and no on-the-spot correction available. State this plainly: the traveler will be denied boarding or entry.

When this catches travelers out

The most common scenario is proactive renewal. Many travelers renew their passport before it expires as a matter of routine — booking a new document while the old one still has validity. If ETIAS was obtained using the old passport, it is invalidated the moment the new passport is issued.

A passport reported lost or stolen, then replaced, creates the same problem. So does a passport replaced because of physical damage. The reason for replacement does not affect the outcome: the new passport number does not match the ETIAS record.

Children's passports typically have shorter validity periods than adult documents. An ETIAS obtained for a child when first applied may be invalidated by a renewal before the three-year ETIAS term is up. Families planning multi-year travel should check children's ETIAS records after any passport renewal.

What to do

If you have renewed your passport after obtaining ETIAS, apply for a new ETIAS using the new passport before you travel. The old authorization cannot be updated, transferred, or linked to a replacement document.

The original ETIAS application fee is not refunded. The new application requires a new fee payment. Apply only through the official EU portal. [the official ETIAS portal](https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en)

If your trip is approaching and you have recently renewed your passport, verify your ETIAS status before travel. Checking which passport number is on file takes only a few minutes and can prevent a boarding denial at the airport.

Passport validity rules for ETIAS travel

Beyond the ETIAS link, Schengen entry requires that your passport meet a minimum validity requirement at the time of travel. The document must typically be valid for at least three months beyond your intended date of departure from the Schengen area. Travelers with passports nearing expiry should renew before applying for ETIAS — renewing afterward means applying for ETIAS twice and paying the fee twice.
