ETIAS How it works

How Much Does ETIAS Cost — and Who Is Exempt from the Fee?

ETIAS costs €20 per application. Travelers under 18 and over 70 are exempt. The fee is non-refundable regardless of outcome or whether you travel.

The fee

The ETIAS application fee is €20, payable at the time of application through the official EU portal. The fee is set by the European Union and applies uniformly across all eligible nationalities. Any site charging a different amount is either adding a service charge on top of the official fee or is an unofficial third-party site that should not be used.

Fee exemptions

Two categories of travelers are exempt from the €20 fee: applicants who are under 18 years of age at the time of application, and applicants who are over 70 years of age. Both categories still need to complete the application — the authorization is required, but no fee is charged.

The exemption is applied automatically based on the date of birth entered in the application. No additional documentation is required to claim it. For confirmation of the current fee structure, see [the official ETIAS portal](https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en).

Non-refundable

The ETIAS fee is non-refundable in all circumstances. If the application is rejected, the fee is not returned. If travel plans change and the authorization is not used, the fee is not returned. If the ETIAS expires unused — for example, because a passport was renewed before travel — the fee is not returned.

This applies to the €20 government fee. Any service charges paid to third-party intermediaries are also non-refundable at the intermediary's discretion.

Payment

Payment is made online at the time of application through the official ETIAS portal. Accepted payment methods will be confirmed when the portal launches in Q4 2026. Credit and debit card payment is expected to be supported. [the official ETIAS portal](https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en)

Unofficial sites and inflated fees

Third-party sites that offer to assist with ETIAS applications typically charge more than €20. The additional amount is a service charge, not a government fee. Paying more through an unofficial site does not produce a more reliable result, a faster decision, or any additional benefit.

Some unofficial sites misrepresent their total charge as the official government fee. Before paying anything, confirm you are on the europa.eu domain. For guidance on identifying and avoiding unofficial ETIAS sites, see [our guide to avoiding fake ETIAS sites](/articles/etias-scam-sites).
